Thursday 12th April 2007Southern Health, with support from a number of Division members, has recently commenced a regular refugee health clinic at Dandenong Hospital. The outpatients clinic runs each Monday afternoon from 1:30 4:30 and is supported by infectious diseases specialists, paediatrics, consultant psychiatry, refugee health nurse, etc. At this stage, the Division provides financial support for GP participation.
Further Dandenong GP, Dr Janet Gross, has provided figures indicating that she is currently seeing almost 50% of refugees newly arrived to Melbourne at her practice (46 in March alone, 387 since July 2006). She advises that there are significant issues around health and social needs, with particular cultural concerns. Clearly, there is a need for additional support to ensure that these people are able to access screening, immunisation, health care, referrals and specialists, medication, dietary supplements, etc.
CAN YOU HELP? For more information or if you are interested in joining the roster for this unique clinic, call Graeme Fletcher at the Division 9706 7311 or Dr Gross on 9794 7038
